Embracing Compassion in Our Enneagram Journey

Updated: Mar 12

At Enneagram Training, we believe that having compassion for our type pattern is essential for our personal growth journey and transformation. We don’t view our type as inherently ‘bad’ or something to eliminate. Instead, we understand it as a protective mechanism we developed in childhood to help us survive.

Understanding Our Type Patterns

Often, we find ourselves in situations where we are not in imminent danger. Yet, we continue to expend a great deal of energy maintaining our type mechanisms. This can lead to stress and physical tension in both our minds and bodies. Over time, this constant strain can drain our energy.

When we allow our type pattern to operate unconsciously, we may struggle to truly connect with ourselves and others. This disconnection can hinder our personal growth and limit our experiences.

How Can Developing More Compassion Help Us?

By extending compassion to our types, we can begin to relax. Speaking gently to ourselves, as we would to a loved one, fosters kindness and understanding. This approach helps soften our patterns.

The more we learn to relax our habitual type patterns, the less control they exert over us. With self-awareness, we can release stress and tension, leading to a greater sense of wholeness and integration. Judging ourselves or fighting against our type patterns only creates resistance, which increases tension. Instead, we should approach our basic fears and limiting beliefs with compassion and friendship.

Nurturing Self-Compassion

To cultivate self-compassion, we can explore our Centres of Intelligence – head, heart, and gut – and identify which one needs love and attention.

The Three Centres of Intelligence

For instance, if your heart centre feels sad or grieving, journaling might be beneficial. Writing a letter to yourself about a challenging situation can help process your feelings. Alternatively, sharing your experiences with a close friend can lighten your emotional load and enhance your wellbeing.

If anger is bubbling up, focusing on your gut centre through somatic awareness can help you regain calm. Gentle movements, like walking in nature, practising Tai Chi, or enjoying a massage, can promote relaxation and flow.

When fear arises, practising meditation or mindfulness can assist in calming your head centre. Letting go of negative thoughts about the future helps you connect with the present moment, bringing clarity to your concerns.

Whatever activities resonate with you, nurturing ourselves is vital for relaxing our type patterns and restoring our energy.

The 5 A’s of Transformation

We’d like to introduce you to The 5 A’s of Transformation, developed by David Daniels, a remarkable Enneagram teacher who inspired our approach at Enneagram Training through the Narrative Enneagram.

This practice serves as a core resource for relaxing our type patterns. It embodies a compassionate form of inner inquiry, focusing on embracing and accepting our reactivity.

Awareness

Develop and connect with your Inner Observer. Notice when your type operates on automatic. Cultivate practices that enhance your receptivity and grounded presence.

Allowing & Accepting

Open your heart to whatever arises in the moment. Give it space. This marks the beginning of your journey towards accepting and befriending your reactivity.

Appreciation

Manifest gratitude for yourself and others. This practice brings you into the natural flow of giving and receiving.

Action

Pause, inquire, and stay with your experience. Release and take action.

Adherence

Commit to the process. As you journey with the Enneagram, be gentle and kind to yourself. Celebrate all the positive shifts and changes you make, no matter how small.

Working with the Enneagram in this manner encourages a slower, more attentive relationship with ourselves. Instead of pushing for change, we learn to remain present with what is already here. We notice our patterns with honesty and care.

Over time, this practice transforms how we listen to ourselves and others. Our inner world becomes less driven by habit and more shaped by awareness. Growth emerges not through effort but through understanding.

The Path to Personal Growth

As we embrace this compassionate approach, we open ourselves to deeper personal growth. We learn to navigate our type patterns with grace and understanding. This journey is not about erasing our types but about integrating them into our lives in a healthier way.

By fostering self-awareness and compassion, we create a nurturing environment for ourselves. We can explore our strengths and weaknesses, allowing us to grow and evolve.
