Learning the Enneagram in Community

Why relational learning deepens self-understanding

For many people, learning the Enneagram begins with a book, a podcast or an online type description. These can be valuable starting points, but the deepest understanding often comes through experiential Enneagram training in community.

At Enneagram Training UK & Ireland, our approach is rooted in the Narrative Tradition, where people learn through presence, listening and lived experience. This kind of relational learning helps move the Enneagram from ideas on a page into real insight, compassion and growth.

Understanding our patterns

One of the reasons the Enneagram is so powerful is because it clearly describes our patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. It helps us understand how our early survival strategies became unconscious and automatic patterns. These survival strategies were our intelligent response to how we were met and cared for in life.

A deep understanding of the structure of our personality and how it developed – as experienced in our Foundation Programme trainings – enables us to be compassionate towards ourselves and towards others.

For many people exploring the Enneagram, this compassionate understanding becomes the starting point for meaningful personal growth.

Why learning in relationship matters

Because we are relational beings and our type patterns formed during our earliest relationships, it makes sense that our growth and healing also happens in relationships.

Books, podcasts and videos all have value. They can broaden our knowledge and sharpen our understanding of the types. Many people first encounter the Enneagram through reading or online resources.

However there is no substitute for exploring the Enneagram experientially, in person, in community. That is where real self-understanding takes root. Experiential Enneagram training allows people to move beyond theory and begin recognising how these patterns operate in everyday life.

Learning through lived experience in the Narrative Tradition

In the Narrative Tradition, we learn about the types by hearing people describe their lived experience - what it actually feels like, day to day, to live with their particular patterns.

In the room, we feel the energy of the types, we hear their language, we understand what is important to them and what is challenging. There is no room for stereotypes here.

Listening to a group of people of a particular type, we sense what they have in common but also how different they are. The Narrative Tradition acknowledges the uniqueness of each individual.

This nuanced, human understanding simply cannot be gained from a book.

Discovering ourselves in community

When we are with a group of people in person, all of whom are exploring their own type patterns, we get to experience at first hand how our own and others’ patterns play out.

We create a gentle, supportive space in which we can face our blind spots.

Other people bring up reactions in us. They push our buttons and touch our wounds. At the same time, they help us to see and appreciate the wonderful parts of ourselves that we may have taken for granted.

In a well-held learning environment, these interactions become opportunities for insight rather than judgement.

A space for self-development

Exploring the Enneagram in community allows us a safe space to further our self-development. We learn how to be present with other people.

We learn to notice and work with our own internal reactions in real time. We begin to challenge our assumptions about ourselves and about others.

Gradually we find new language and new ways of responding which help relax our type patterns. At the end of the training we bring our insights, understanding and compassion back into our everyday relationships with family, friends and colleagues.

Continuing the journey together

In-person Enneagram trainings often bring people into contact with a community of others who share an interest in self-understanding and growth. Many participants find that these connections become an important part of their ongoing journey.

At Enneagram Training UK & Ireland we like to nurture these relationships - through our online community and community evening workshops, which offer a space for people who have trained together to continue meeting, reflecting and learning with one another.

Enneagram training in the Narrative Tradition

At Enneagram Training UK & Ireland we offer experiential, community-based Enneagram training rooted in the Narrative Tradition through our Foundation Programme in the UK.

The Intensive Growth Journey provides an in-depth experiential understanding of each of the nine Enneagram types while also offering an opportunity to explore your own personality patterns in a supportive learning environment.

This forms the entry point into our Foundation pathway, which also includes:

Instincts and Subtypes and Deepening Spiritual Awareness trainings.

Together these courses provide a grounded introduction to the Enneagram and a solid basis for those working with people as coaches, spiritual directors, managers, therapists or leaders.

For those who wish to go further, the Foundation Programme also provides the pathway into our professional Enneagram training programmes in the UK.
